● TITLE: A new method for obtaining large centrifugal accelerations

●  ABSTRACT: In order to obtain centrifugal fields of over 1,000,000 g's very high rotational speeds are required. The design difficulties in this range are so numerous that there were only two methods of doing this: 1. a special hydrogen drive turbine 2. a magnetically suspended rotor electrically driven in high vacuum. A third method which is much cheaper has been shown to be feasible following experiments in the Dept. of Mechanics, Technion. The mechanical drive incorporates the belt suspension for the bearing-less rotor. Speeds of 740,000 r.p.m. and fields of 4,000,000 g's were attained. A theoretical model which explains the effects that were investigated experimentally, and which predicted results for those experiments which were not carried out, has also been developed. Various engineering applications of the drive are given.
