● TITLE: Stability equations for a linear inflatable pouch actuator
● AUTHORS: Bousso, D., Sohet, U.
● SOURCE: Israel Journal of Technology, v. 8, No. 4, pp. 357-366 (1970).
● ABSTRACT: The stability of a linear actuator, consisting of a number of inflatable rectangular coated fabric pouches, is presented using energy methods. The factors influencing stability are: the number of pouches, the geometrical parameters, the shear modulus of the pouch material and the pressure. It is assumed that a deflection of the pouch stack takes place through a mechanism of pure rolling of the pouches and the total potential energy is checked for increase (stable equilibrium) or decrease (unstable equilibrium).

The total energy change in the deflected position is the sum of:
  1. Increase of potential energy due to elastic shear of the pouch edges parallel to the displacement.
  2. Increase of potential energy due to volume reduction caused by the inward displacement of the pouch edges parallel to the displacement.
  3. Decrease of potential energy due to volume increase by elongation of center line of the pouch stack.
Factor (1) and (2) maintain stability while (3) leads to instability. Instability occurs when (3) is greater than the sum of (1) and (2). Finally, the problem of optimum design is discussed with a view to designing actuators capable of utilizing the available strength of the coated fabric without the risk of buckling.
